Gobustan National Park: Azerbaijan’s Ancient Treasure

Located just 64 km southwest of Baku, Gobustan National Park is one of Azerbaijan’s most fascinating historical and natural landmarks. This UNESCO-listed site is famous for its prehistoric petroglyphs, mud volcanoes, and unique rock formations, offering visitors a glimpse into early human civilization.

The park is home to over 6,000 rock carvings, some dating back 40,000 years, depicting scenes of hunting, dancing, rituals, and early life. These engravings provide valuable insights into the daily activities and spiritual beliefs of prehistoric humans who once lived in the region.

Beyond the petroglyphs, Gobustan is also known for its mud volcanoes. These bubbling, otherworldly landscapes create a surreal and mesmerizing experience for visitors. Additionally, the area features Gaval Dash, a large resonant rock that produces musical tones when struck, believed to have been used as an ancient instrument.

A visit to Gobustan offers a mix of history, nature, and geology, making it a must-see destination for travellers to Azerbaijan.
