When you travel things can go wrong, a hotel could shut-down, a train be delayed by hours. Generally these things can happen whether you use a travel agent or not. We are aware that independent travel is not for everyone but we have never had a problem on a trip that we couldn't resolve with a little effort.
With a travel agent you do have someone to complain to but that doesn't mean they can do anything about it. You might get some money back eventually, but if you have good travel insurance you should also be covered as an independent traveller.
When you book flights and hotels always use a credit card and always make sure you have travel insurance in place.
Remember you have saved money by travelling independently, if you do have to spend on an emergency taxi or a change of hotel, you can.
Once again, make sure you have travel insurance.
