Then turn inland for one of the great Sri Lanka experiences: elephants at dawn in Udawalawe National Park. It’s not a matter of whether you’ll see a tusker, it’s how many you’ll snap from your open-top jeep.

You can’t go to Sri Lanka and not experience the historic tea stations of the hilly interior, and Ella is the ultimate romantic stopping point after a meandering train journey with to-die-for jungle views. Whether whiling away hours on breeze-kissed verandas or testing your mettle with heart-pounding hikes, there’s something for you.

Beyond Ella there’s the lamplit pilgrimage up Sri Pada – or Adam’s Peak. As sunrise breaks you’ll witness the shadow of holy mountain cast over the clouds below.
