The Overnight Train from Belgrade to Podgorica

Travelling on the overnight train from Belgrade to Podgorica is one of the most spectacular rail journeys in Europe. Known as the Bar-Belgrade railway, this route connects Serbia’s capital with Montenegro’s passing through scenic landscapes, offering an unforgettable experience through the heart of the Balkans.

Departing from Belgrade’s Topčider Station, the train winds its way south, passing rolling hills, deep forests, and charming villages. As night falls, you can settle into basic yet comfortable sleeper compartments, lulled by the rhythmic motion of the train. Remember to keep your passport close for the nighttime border crossing. The journey takes approximately 11 hours, covering over 450 kilometres.

One of the highlights of the trip is waking up early to breathtaking views as the train crosses the Mala Rijeka Viaduct, one of the world’s highest railway bridges.
